SURFACE MOUNT NOSINGS
STNR: 2'' Surface Mount
Stair Nosing
STNR: 2'' Abrasive Surface Mount Stair Nosing
The low-profile STNR 2.0” wide abrasive stair nosing is designed with a replaceable 1″ photoluminescent marking or sand-grit insert strip to meet slip-resistance and contrasting stripe requirements. Designed for surface-mount applications, making it ideal for both new stair installations and retrofit projects. Suitable for both interior and exterior environments.
Engineered for secure attachment, the STNR nosing can be installed using the included manufacturer-recommended adhesive and/or mechanical fasteners, ensuring reliable performance on virtually any surface finish.
Constructed from durable aluminum. The nosing fits existing stair treads with a bull-nose radius between 3/16” and 1/2”. Its slim 1/8” height and tapered edge creates a smooth floor transition that minimizes tripping hazards. Multiple colors, finishes and options are available to match project aesthetics or meet specific code requirements.
Code Compliance:
- Complies with IBC, IFC, NFPA, ASTM, OSHA, ADA and California Title 24 contrasting stripe requirements.
- UL Approved.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the purpose of surface mount or retrofit stair nosings?
Surface mount and retrofit stair nosings are designed to improve stair safety by enhancing visibility and slip resistance on existing stair treads, steps, and edges. These stair nosings provide a fast, cost-effective safety upgrade without the need for full stair replacement.
By increasing traction and defining the stair edge, stair nosings reduce the risk of slips and falls—especially in high-traffic or low-light environments. In normal, low-light, or no-light conditions, retrofit stair nosings offer vital visual cues for safe navigation. In emergencies, the added visibility helps occupants exit quickly and enables first responders to enter safely.
Our surface mount stair nosings are available in a variety of finishes and styles to meet both functional and aesthetic needs. Options include ribbed textures, abrasive surfaces, and glow-in-the-dark or contrasting color strips to comply with code requirements and personal preferences.
When should I use surface mount or retrofit stair nosings?
Surface mount or retrofit stair nosings are ideal for enhancing stair safety and code compliance in a wide range of scenarios, especially when working with existing stairs.
You should use surface mount stair nosings when:
- Your stair treads, steps, or edges are already in place and need a safety upgrade.
- Stairs present a slip, trip, or fall hazard due to worn or unsafe surfaces.
- Building codes require the addition of contrasting color stripes, slip-resistant surfaces, or photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) markings for emergency egress paths.
- New construction projects need a simpler, cost-effective stair nosing solution that avoids complex installations.
- Future maintenance and replacement is a consideration—retrofit stair nosings are easy to remove and replace without disturbing the original stair structure.
Surface mount stair nosings offer a flexible, efficient, and code-compliant way to increase visibility, durability, and safety on virtually any stair surface.
How do surface mount or retrofit stair nosings attach?
Surface mount and retrofit stair nosings are designed for fast, secure installation on virtually any existing stair tread, step, or edge—regardless of the material or surface condition.
These stair nosings attach directly to the flat leading edge of stairs using commercial-grade adhesive, mechanical fasteners, or a combination of both, depending on project needs and site conditions.
Each nosing features a low-profile design with a tapered edge, allowing for a smooth, seamless transition to the walking surface—helping to reduce tripping hazards and improve pedestrian safety.
The standard ribbed bullnose profile not only enhances slip resistance but also complies with international building code requirements. This design fits a wide variety of existing stairs and edges, providing a universal and code-compliant solution for stair safety retrofits or new installations.
